ABOUT THE ARTISANS
Each bag is handmade by Mo, her sister and her mother in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The women microentrepreneurs use handwoven cotton purchased in the small villages. By purchasing a drawstring backpack, you empower Mo and her family to bring their traditional crafts into the global market, and help them support a sustainable livelihood.
ABOUT THE PRODUCT
The fabric is inspired by the Hmong textile art, a traditional embroidery consisting of bold geometric designs often realized in bright, contrasting colors. Different patterns and techniques of production are associated with geographical regions and cultural subdivisions within the global Hmong community. Since the mass resettlement of Hmong refugees from Laos following the end of the Secret War, major stylistic changes appeared, highly influenced by the tastes of the Western marketplace. These flower cloths, also known as story cloths, use figures to represent stories from Hmong history and folklore in a narrative form. Today, the practice of embroidery continues to be passed down through generations of Hmong people and the textile art remain important markers of Hmong ethnicity.
